Description of Starthistle, Malta (Centaurea melitensis):
Malta starthistle is an invasive weed that has winged stems that are green to grayish in color. It appears much like a thistle, but it has smaller yellow flowers and relatively short spines. It grows from 1 to 2 feet tall and has a deep and simple taproot.
