Description of Cutworms (Noctuidae spp.):
Cutworms are the larvae of moths and live in the thatch layer and upper-soil layer of the lawn. Because of this, they tend to chop down the grass blades from the base of the plant; causing unsightly brown areas.
A good way to see that you have cutworms is to pour soapy water onto the lawn. Within 10 minutes, the cutworms will emerge and you will see them on the brown thatch layer of dead grass.
