Description of Chiggers (Trombiculidae spp.):
Chiggers are the larvae of the Trombiculidate mite. They have just simply and commonly been called "red bugs." Their bites can be extremely itchy, therefore are an annoyance when walking through the lawn. They prefer thick, moist, and shady areas, therefore that's a good place to start when looking for them in the turf.
To check for them, you can put a 6x6 inch piece of black cardboard or paper in the lawn and stand it upright. After about 10 minutes, go back and they will be gathered near the top. They should be easy to spot on the dark background.
