Description of Black Turfgrass Ataenius (Ataenius spretulus):
The black turfgrass ataenius, in its adult form, is 0.2 inches long, jet black, and has grooves on the wing that run parallel. Female black turfgrass ataenius will burrow into the thatch layer and upper parts of the soil and lay 11 to 12 eggs. The hatch white grubs may be identified by their unusually small size.
