Description of Leaf Smuts (Basidiomycota):
A fungus that mostly attacks the stems of plants. In flowering plants, it can infect the tips of the stamen in the flower. Dark colored spots swell and can explode scattering large amounts of sooty black spores. This fungus is spread by water splashing from the infected plant to one nearby or from the soil onto a plant.  Produces a mass of black, powdery spores that accumulate in sootlike masses, which are formed within blisters in seeds, leaves, stems, flowers parts, and bulbs.
