Description of Starthistle, Purple (Centaurea calcitrapa):
Purple starthistle, sometimes called red starthistle, grows up to 3 feet in height and has highly branched stems. When young, the stems have fine and cobwebby hairs. The leaves on the stem range from 5 to 8 inches in length and have dots of resin along the leaf surface. It flowers June through November.
